I have always wondered about Acupuncture and wanted to learn more about it.

Brenda Terry, MAcOM; L.Ac. is a North Carolina board certified licensed Chinese herbalist and acupuncturist with over five years experience.  Her lifelong fascination with the human body led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture in Austin, Texas at AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine.

Thank to Brenda for sharing about Acupuncture . This has been a great learning experience.  We spoke on the following points:

  • Why should I opt for Acupuncture (Facial rejuvenation) over a facial massage at the spa ?

This podcast is a continuation of last week’s podcast with Shanti Thokchom, who is working as a Nursing Assistant in an old age Home in Oklahoma in United States. In part 1 she shared about going through very hard times with her journey from Manipur all the way to America, going through her separation and lost of her husband.

In this episode, she shares about her life as a single Mother. She is a strong single mother, the rock for her precious little boy working very hard to secure the best future for her son.

She shares very interesting story of learning how to drive in America, her travelling experience within America as a healing process coping up with her loss.

Many immigrants in America can associated the struggle and fear in learning and driving in the freeways in America. And this lady travels all over without a GPS (still using paper Maps!!), sleeps in the car, travels with basic needs. It is a great learning experience to learn from her that you don’t need a lot of money to travel if you are passionate about travelling and seeing different places. All you need is the Gas money. She shares that she lives within her means and don’t need to dine in any fancy restaurants or stay in expensive Hotels or wear any branded clothes.

It was a great honour to talk with Eche Shanti, such a wonderful woman with so much positive vibes.

Today I am with Shanti Thokchom, who is working as a Nursing Assistant in an old age Home in Oklahoma in the United States. I really admire her strength and positive attitude towards life even after having gone through very hard times with her journey from Manipur all the way to America, going through different jobs of a private nurse, nanny, working in a daycare, working as a waitress, her separation and lost of her husband. Inspite of all the hardship, she pursued to get license to work as Nursing Assistant. She is a strong single mother, the rock for her precious little boy working very hard to secure the best future for her son.

She has a very interesting diverse background with a Hindu Meitei father and a Christian Kuki mother and she married an American. She shares her story about living with the differences in diversity and having stayed and travelled in different places in the world.

It was a great honour to talk with Eche Shanti, such a wonderful woman with so much positive vibes.

Today I am with a Guest Speaker where many listeners have requested to have him at our show from the very beginning when we just started our talk show. And here he is at our 21st episode, we are proud to present Halley Laithangbam, the successful male model with cute dimple baby smiles from Manipur who has captured himself in national and international platform in glamour industry.

Driven by self motivation and passionate in chasing his dream, Halley started modeling at the age of 17. With a name like Halley , it gave him a noted stand when he entered the field. His revolutionary looks, macho body but cute dimple baby smiles made him most lovable and successful model . Halley bagged numerous titles including MR.PUNE CITADEL 2010 MAN-HUNT MANIPUR 2002 MR.SURYADATTA 2005 and achieved many other prizes in different fashion related events.

What I am hearing is that in the fashion Industry, Manipuri look is well accepted. But it may be difficult to get a break in Bollywood and Indian Movie Industry as the Characters in Bollywood movies doesn’t call for Manipuri look . Bollywood Wake up !!

I am proud to present the interview with Jamuna Devi Advani, originally from Manipur, currently located in California, USA and writer of the book “Land of the Dancing Deer”, deer referring to Sangai found in Manipur. She has created a beautiful family history in poetry and her book begins with reflections about her memories, beliefs and stories of her life’s journey particularly in Manipur.

I am honoured to receive an autograph copy of her book “Land of The Dancing Deer”, I really enjoyed her book, it took me back to Manipur as I was reading the book and seeing it from her eyes at that era in Manipur and her pictures/paintings added to my imagination in seeing her grandmother and other incidents which she had mentioned in the book. She has very interesting thoughts and advice to share on raising kids, inter marriage between different communities sharing her own experience having married out of the community.

I really admire her strong positive attitude, giving out so much positive energy and openness in trying different things, keeping up with modern technologies and times after suffering a great lost when her husband passed away. And she plays golf too 🙂

Today I have a very special Guest, Dr. Sohini Ray, Lecturer in Anthropology at Santa Monica College and Founder/Artistic Director of Manipuri Dance Visions, training center of classical Manipuri dance in Los Angeles, California, USA. When I saw that we have a training center to learn Manipur Dance in California, I got very excited and had to hear the voice of the person behind it. And I found more interesting details, In addition to promoting Manipuri Dance, She has written a dissertation essay on the Meetei Mayek script (also Meitei Mayek, Manipuri script). Yes, she is a Bengali, a non-Manipuri promoting Manipuri dance and Manipur through her research work. I really admire her work and am so proud to present her voice.

Dr. Ray, a rare combination of an outstanding performer and a prolific scholar, has won the prestigious Lestor Horton award in 2008 for her production “Gita Govinda”.  (Lestor Horton award is the equivalent of the Grammy. It is given for live concert dance.) And, has received two more Horton nominations in 2007 and 2011.  She won the Los Angeles Treasures award in 2007, and numerous other grants and fellowships. A Ph. D. in anthropology from University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Dr. Ray has held fellowships in Harvard University and has taught both academic and practical dance classes in several American Universities.

Her research on Manipuri dance won the prestigious J.B. Donne prize in anthropology of art from the Royal Anthropological Institute, UK in 2009; she being the first dance-researcher in the world ever to have achieved this rare accolade, also the first Asian and the first woman.

Dr. Ray was identified as a child prodigy by the legendary Manipuri dance maestero late Guru Bipin Singh at age seven and was trained by him and his senior disciples, the Jhaveri sisters for more than twenty-five years. She received the prestigious national scholarship in Manipuri dance from the Government of India at age fourteen and numerous prizes and awards as a young performer in India, and was a lead dancer in Jhaveri sisters dance troupe for several years. Concurrently, while dancing professionally full-time through her college and university careers she stood first class first in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in anthropology from University of Calcutta. In 1992 she chose to move to United States to pursue an MA in dance in University of California at Los Angeles, and has lived and worked there since.

Dr. Ray has travelled and researched in remote regions of Manipur for the past twenty years and has one of the finest collection of audio-visual materials on Manipuri dance in the world.
