Episode 038 FindingTheVoices : Sonia Nepram sharing about making of the Manipuri documentary movie Gun and a God

Presenting the podcast of Sonia Nepram sharing about making of the Manipuri documentary movie Gun and a God. It is interesting to hear the aspects of making documentary movies in getting closer to the subject, living the life and story. I am proud to see woman director coming up making movies from woman’s point of view. Hats off to the wonderful team of “Gun and a God” in bringing out the voice and story of Purnima. This could have happened to anyone of us.

“Gun and a God” is an endeavor to explore a cosmos of conflict through the lives of women.

Purnima is having the best of her evenings with her inmates in a jail room. Yet her every laughs and giggles are concealing a grave conflict. The visiting hours in the jail are dreadful with no one to visit her. These are the times when she finds herself asking who she is.

Tagged as a “disgraced inheritance”, from an unknown father to a mentally unfit mother, her childhood was chastised. The reality of being an illegitimate child haunts during her teens and when she was married, it crucified her.

A “Gun and a God” is the journey a woman, whose will was forged by the structural violence of her existence, who finally finds her voice in a Gun and justice in a God.

Special Mother’s Day Podcast with Karina Duchastel,  French-Canadian currently in United States sharing her journey about “Being a Mom” as part of the special series of podcast for Mother’s Day. I really enjoyed having her in our talk show, she brought very interesting perspective and it was a great learning experience. Please tune in to listen about Karina’s wonderful journey of being a Mom for her 3 wonderful kids.

Karina shares a very interesting and important point to take time to reconnect with your husband. Also she shared her wonderful perspective that Children needs to be congratulated for listening & behaving well and it is their decision to take the advice parents provide 🙂

Little bit about Karina in her own words:

My name is Karina Duchastel and I am a mom of 3 kids.  I am a French-Canadian from Quebec City and have been living in the USA since 2000.  I have been raising my kids in 3 different states: California, Maryland and currently living in the a suburb of Seattle, Washington.  My journey as a mother so far has been filled with challenges of raising kids in unfamiliar environments and language and a hard choice of being apart from our extended family. I certainly never thought I would immigrate to a country other than Canada.  My shared experience with other foreign families living in the USA have not only opened my mind about new cultures but enabled me to build strong friendships that I can call family.  Before being a mom, I had a career as an electrical and software engineer.  I actually met my husband Nicolas at an engineering school called Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal.  I have been working part-time for the past 5 years as a Quality assurance and Test Engineer for a small software company in Bellevue Washington.  I also enjoyed volunteering at my kids school and I am very passionate about passing on my French-Canadian culture to my kids and their friends.

This podcast is a continuation of last week’s podcast with Shanti Thokchom, who is working as a Nursing Assistant in an old age Home in Oklahoma in United States. In part 1 she shared about going through very hard times with her journey from Manipur all the way to America, going through her separation and lost of her husband.

In this episode, she shares about her life as a single Mother. She is a strong single mother, the rock for her precious little boy working very hard to secure the best future for her son.

She shares very interesting story of learning how to drive in America, her travelling experience within America as a healing process coping up with her loss.

Many immigrants in America can associated the struggle and fear in learning and driving in the freeways in America. And this lady travels all over without a GPS (still using paper Maps!!), sleeps in the car, travels with basic needs. It is a great learning experience to learn from her that you don’t need a lot of money to travel if you are passionate about travelling and seeing different places. All you need is the Gas money. She shares that she lives within her means and don’t need to dine in any fancy restaurants or stay in expensive Hotels or wear any branded clothes.

It was a great honour to talk with Eche Shanti, such a wonderful woman with so much positive vibes.

Music: Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko from yaadon ki baraat (This was a very popular songs during the time Eche Shanti was growing up and her favorite song)
