S03E19 FindingTheVoices with RK Ranendrajit: Sedition and Freedom in Manipur (Part 3)
Guest Speaker :RK Ranendrajit, Social Activist, a former fighter pilot of the IAF and former editor of Freedom in Manipur.
Language: Interview in Meteilon
Location: Bir Tikendrajit Memorial complex, Manipur, India

Presenting the third part of RK Ranendrajit ’s interview..
Former fighter pilot and social activist,  RK Ranendrajit talks about the development of sports in Manipur and the need to hunt for young talent and groom the upcoming generations. He stressed the need to sustain a very good infrastructure in sports so that the level of competition is in par with international standards. He also emphasized the importance of providing sufficient funds in the sports department in Manipur so that there would be enough staffs and leaders who could carry on sports management and development for the future generations.
RK Ranendrajit also talks about the gutsy newspaper daily, Freedom. The press was established on 12th December, 1992 but discontinued from the first week of February, 2001 because of constant opposition by the Government of Manipur. He was charged of sedition by the Government citing an article that he published during the 90’s as being rebellious. However, he was acquitted and the sedition charges were dropped after 17 years by the court. He has faced similar situations in the past. During his time in the Indian Air Force serving as a fighter pilot, RK Ranendrajit’s integrity was questioned and he was put under constant surveillance by the organization as his brother, RK Meghen alias Sanayaima, was the chairman of the banned insurgent group United National Liberation Front. Then in Manipur, the Government tainted the reputation of the institute by getting the school raided in the middle of the night under suspicion of being a revolutionary school.
Tune in to this episode to listen to RK Ranendrajit expressing how he feels about all these incidents in his life. Apart from these dark spots, he also talks about the positive changes that have come about.

S03E17 FindingTheVoices with Dr. Nabakanta Sharma: Impact to doctors on prevalent Mob justice in Manipur.

S03E17 FindingTheVoices with Dr. Nabakanta Sharma: Impact to doctors on prevalent Mob justice in Manipur.
Guest Speaker :Dr. Nabakanta Sharma, specialist in family planning.
Language: Interview in English
Location: Imphal, Manipur, India

Often when a woman dies during child birth at a hospital in Manipur, the
system of mob justice comes into place which usually goes hand in hand with violence and destruction of property. These kinds of actions discourage the doctors and sometimes they give up practice, which creates further problem in
the society. Dr. Nabakanta Sharma calmly explains why these kinds of things happen in the society and the drawbacks it brings. He shares his own experiences of such sort in this episode. In one instance, he was forced to fork out a sum of rupees one lakh for removing the uterus of a woman,
even though he practically saved the woman’s life along with her child. And in another instance, he was appreciated when he removed the uterus of a young unmarried woman to save her life. He pointed out the stark
difference in the reaction of the people in these two cases.
Dr. Nabakanta also talks about the challenges of child birth procedures in
the hospitals. According to World Health Organization, the chance of complications that can arise during such operations is 10% i.e., one out of every ten women operated have a chance of developing complications. We also discuss about the instances in Manipur where difficulties have also risen because of negligence of doctors. He says that not all of these incidents arise out of negligence but sometimes out of complications which is beyond the control of the doctor.

S03E16 FindingTheVoices with Dr. Nabakanta Sharma: Mostly females are undergoing the family planning procedure. Why not male?

S03E16 FindingTheVoices with Dr. Nabakanta Sharma: Mostly females are undergoing the family planning procedure. Why not male?
Guest Speaker :Dr. Nabakanta Sharma, specialist in family planning.
Language: Interview in English
Location: Imphal, Manipur, India

Dr. Nabakanta Sharma says that with regards to family planning, it is not necessary that only females should undergo the operation. Males can also contribute in family planning by undergoing the sterilization process. But even though male sterilization is much simpler than that in female, mostly females are still undergoing the more complex operation for family planning in Manipur.

In this episode, Dr. Nabakanta Sharma shares about his trip to Europe organized by World Health Organization in the 90’s where he presented some facts and figures about Manipur for the Reproductive Child Health program. He shares about how some staff members of the team came to Manipur and offered him help. He also talks about the wonderful paintings of Europe and how advanced they were in the medical field. He got the opportunity to gain invaluable experience during his time in Europe.

We also get to know about the system of adoption that is prevailing in Manipur. He says that even though there is a system provided by the Government to be followed for adoption, not many people follow this system and instead prefer to finish up the adoption process in a hush. This routine can sometimes turn out to be very unfortunate for some babies, but he says that so far he has been lucky as nothing of such sort has happened in his profession.

S03E15 FindingTheVoices with Dr. Nabakanta Sharma: Family planning, abortion and woman’s heath in Manipur.
Guest Speaker :Dr. Nabakanta Sharma, specialist in family planning.
Language: Interview in English
Location: Imphal, Manipur, India

Dr. Nabakanta Sharma is a specialist in family planning and one of the most dedicated doctors today. He was kind enough to share his story and many important facts about family planning. Family planning is the practice of controlling the number of children one has and the intervals between their births, particularly by means of contraception or voluntary sterilization. It reduces the need for unsafe abortion and prevents unintended pregnancy. It even prevents the death of mothers and children.

During the early 70’s, Dr. Nabakanta passed on an opportunity to get enrolled in one of the top medical colleges in India due to financial reasons and instead studied in Manipur Medical College (now RIMS). Commenting on this, he says,
It was my tragedy, but it was my destiny! and he is right, for he became
one of the finest specialists in Manipur. He says that getting selected by
the Manipur Public ServiceCommission and getting blindly posted in the family planning department was the turning point of his career.
In this episode, we discuss about the status of women’s reproductive rights particularly in Manipur and the difference in medical facilities between the hilly areas and the valley. He tells us about the huge disparity between the two and the life threatening difficulties faced by people residing in the remote
areas. Dr. Nabakanta also shares a few facts about some of the options available for birth control and its positive impacts in a family.
