Episode 038 FindingTheVoices : Sonia Nepram sharing about making of the Manipuri documentary movie Gun and a God
Presenting the podcast of Sonia Nepram sharing about making of the Manipuri documentary movie Gun and a God. It is interesting to hear the aspects of making documentary movies in getting closer to the subject, living the life and story. I am proud to see woman director coming up making movies from woman’s point of view. Hats off to the wonderful team of “Gun and a God” in bringing out the voice and story of Purnima. This could have happened to anyone of us.
“Gun and a God” is an endeavor to explore a cosmos of conflict through the lives of women.
Purnima is having the best of her evenings with her inmates in a jail room. Yet her every laughs and giggles are concealing a grave conflict. The visiting hours in the jail are dreadful with no one to visit her. These are the times when she finds herself asking who she is.
Tagged as a “disgraced inheritance”, from an unknown father to a mentally unfit mother, her childhood was chastised. The reality of being an illegitimate child haunts during her teens and when she was married, it crucified her.
A “Gun and a God” is the journey a woman, whose will was forged by the structural violence of her existence, who finally finds her voice in a Gun and justice in a God.

This podcast (in Meitei-Lon/Manipuri language) details the making of Manipuri animated movie Keibu-kei-oiba (The man who turns into a tiger) which is based on a popular Manipuri folktale by Bhumenjoy Konsam. I watched the movie with my kids. We enjoyed it and loved it. I was amazed that they sat through the whole movies and now they are running all over playing “Thong Handok-o, Thong Handok-o”
This episode is all about the making of the movie Keibu-kei-oiba , Bhumenjoy shares the challenges in making the story as an animated movie, developing, building, designing up each character, each scene creating from a blank frame to creating everything from scratch making the 84 minutes movie. It is amazing to hear about the voice over details for each of the characters.
The whole team put a lot of effort in making this movie, consulting and researching so that it is presented very authentic in terms of music, even the musical instrument and script used. Hats off to the whole team. Thanks for this wonderful gift to the Manipuri community.
In the previous Episode 36 Bhumenjoy Konsam, shared about himself, about how his career shaped from studying from Chemistry to Multimedia, choosing career between a low paying Multimedia job of Rs 2500 versus a Govt. Job as Army officer of Rs 8000. Even though it was a tough path to follow and choose his passion, despite raising eyebrows from people in leaving the traditional path, Bhumenjoy followed his passion.

Episode 035 FindingTheVoices : Memoirs between a Mother and a Daughter on Mother’s Day
This is a podcast (in Meitei-Lon/Manipuri language) sharing memoirs between a Mother and a Daughter on Mother’s Day 2013.
Coming from a background where emotional words are not spoken, love, appreciation, sorry are not explicitly expressed (maybe written in letters), kind of assumed from actions . It is difficult to really speak out emotions!! But seeing how wonderful it is to hear when emotions are spoken out ….. to make an effort to be expressive, for Mother’s Day 2013, FindingTheVoices initiated the exercise to pause and express our words to Mothers thanking and taking a moment to say sorry for any incident …. Many of our Guest Speakers, listeners participated sharing beautiful childhood pictures, beautiful write-up honoring, thanking and saying sorry to Mothers. And I took this opportunity to share my thoughts with my Mother. And yes this was the first time we spoke about this … it was really tough !!! but I felt really great after saying and sharing with my Mother. Yes Madam Saroj Nalini is my mother, my best friend.
Previous Episode 34 covers Madam Saroj Nalini, mother of 4 children, sharing her journey of being a Mother.
She shares interesting incidents as a Mother raising her kids within the economic and financial constraints, mental state she was in.
She lost her Father when she was only 6 months old, after that her birth mother came back to her maternal home, and she was raised by her grandmother and calls her grandmother “Ema” (Mother) and her birth mother “Eche” (Sister). She always thought her mother is her grandmother but when she grew up and came to know her sister is her birth mother, and the trauma and embarrassment she went through when her birth mother got married when she was a teenager. She had this mental shock and depression, was so embarrassed to mix around with her friends, cried a lot going through that phase.
Growing up, when we asked her about her parents, she told us that she was adopted by her grandmother and that she was found under the big Banyan tree at Kwakeithel Bazaar (this tree is no longer there now, but when I was small I remember seeing that tree) and we all believed it .. until later when we grew up. She shares her memoirs of answering questions from her son on who are her parents, why she is not going for “Ningol Chakouba”, the biggest festival celebrated for daughters/sisters in Manipur ?

HAPPY FATHER’s DAY to Mayengbam Swarjeshkumar Singh, Wishes from Mayengbam Pankaj Kumar
Father’s Name: Mayengbam Swarjeshkumar Singh, Sr. Acct. Asst. at MSCB. Imphal

My father was always busy with his work but he did find time to take us to the movies or a concert from time to time. When the Hollywood blockbuster “Jurassic Park” was released and screened at “The Mini French” cinema hall, I requested him to take me to the movie. After days of pleadings, he finally agreed and we went to watch the movie this one holiday. My legs wouldn’t touch the ground when I was pillion riding on his Humber Bicycle, back then. So it was a holiday and the street was empty, I was so excited and couldn’t wait to reach the Hall. After a long ride, we eventually did reach the hall and voila! It was closed. Why? Because it was the 2nd of October, “Gandhi Jayanti”, one of the holidays on which a general strike was imposed in our state. I was disappointed and sulking. My father then took me to the Children’s Park (Indira Park) where I had lots of fun, sliding, swinging and what not. Although, I couldn’t watch that movie, it was still a memorable day.
Most of my elementary math skills were given by my father, especially the “Unitary Method”, he is very good at that. He taught us to be fearless, to be focused, to be a good person, humanism, among other things. Happy Father’s day Baba…:)
