‘Let them grow in the swamp or by the creeks in the village’ was what I heard when I brought two of Laphoorik (Cannas) plants from a creek in the village. With the roots dripping mud and the plants slightly withered they failed to impress. But it didn’t take them more than two weeks for the fresh sprouts to thrust forth, and soon the flowers or the colourful petals found a place on the morning round brass plate next to burning incense sticks and water-filled brass jar
