095 It’s all in the mind : Students of Manipur

Students of Manipur

In the land of Manipur,
You will find many young teenager students put in the forefront to protest issues,
Elsewhere in other part of the world you will find students in a classroom,
In a nurturing ambience,
Instilling values and providing continous education,
It’s time to ask yourself where is the place of the students?

Institutions not allowing the students to participate in the protests are threatened,
Institutions keeping the students in the classroom are bullied,
The Institutions committed to provide education to students,
But you would find many applicants for admission,
Creating another protest demanding to get admissions,
It’s time to ask yourself why you seek for admission from such institutions ?

Mothers toil in the hot sun,
Selling vegetables in the market,
Fathers contented with only one good shirt for work,
Saving all their earnings, selling off their land,
To send the children out of Manipur, in the hope to get continous education and a job with their own merit,
It’s time to ask yourself why many are going out seeking for education ?

The students in Manipur are facing the forefront of the Protest,
Loosing the precious life hit by rubber bullets,
Thrashed by the lawmaker of the land leaving a big scar in their psyche,
The students seeking education outside of Manipur in India,
Are facing the taunt of Identity and acceptance gulping down the many “ching chong” comments,
It’s time to ask yourself where is the place for the students of Manipur ?

~The End~

An Experimental attempt to put thoughts in writing by Monica Ingudam.

Author’s Note : Students in Manipur are often caught in the midst of the conflict, facing what they shouldn’t be facing and having to go lengths to get an education, the education every child deserves. I wrote this poem after I read that a student died during the ongoing agitation and protests. I was filled with pain and helplessness to see the condition of students of Manipur and what they have to go through. I beleive in the power of education and wished for the peaceful ambience of institutions for the students of Manipur.

We should protest and speak up for the things we beleive in. Findingthevoices is my way of protesting. I also beleive in the freedom to choose what I protest for, and protesting in a non voilent way.

  2. I’ve protested in school uniform and seen most of what happens, the reckless minds of the ‘defender of laws’ and the agitation by the students but it wasn’t for nothing we went out to defend what was ours
I don’t know what you mean by this poem but I can read both support and resentment for the fate of the students
And I’m truly sorry for the criticism and mockery you went through for this sometimes people just don’t see the good side and just keep dragging on about one’s fault

    • Thanks for sharing your experience.

  3. It’s really complicated and I feel so sorry for the current state of affairs in Manipur which should be brought under control real soon. It’s a shame that one of the cornerstones of development i.e. education is totally crumbled under the undue political pressure. It’s a high time for everyone in Manipur, I literally mean ‘everyone’ irrespective of tribes, creed and religion to start thinking of the ways to salvage the future of the children or younger generation. Once again I’m reiterating that it really is a complicated situation we find ourselves in; however we’d have to strive for a common goal that will benefit all of us in the long run. Let’s shed off the differences at least when it comes to education. What would be of a tribe or a creed whose future generation would be nothing more than an empty shell? It seems like we’ve forgotten the importance of education in the shaping up of a powerful or rather an efficient state or nation for that matter. We’re lost in the fight for acceptance, in the fight for recognition, in the fight for stability, in the fight for development and last but not the least, in the fight for ‘survival’. It’s really hard for the people of Manipur even to juggle the many undesirable aspects of ‘life in Manipur’ and also manage to go forward just to deceive themselves into thinking that we’re going along with the rest of the world. We’ve long ago forgotten the feeling of having ‘true joy’ or ‘true pride’. But somehow we still managed to drag our feet forward at least. Now things are on the verge of reaching point of no return. And here I’d like to ask a simple question to the central government, why the hell the central government is not listening to us. The source of discontent in the heart of Manipuris is the biased policies of the central government which in turn led to those who are in power in Manipur exploit its people. These all are connected and as I said at the very beginning that this really is one hell of a complicated situation. I know many non-Manipuris would find it hard to fathom the sum of the whole ugly truth. Trust me if the central government really wanted to help us they could have brought things under control through progressive means not through the regressive policies that they have been dolling out since the merger of north-eastern states to Indian Union. What we’re seeing today is the end result of central government’s biased, manipulative and exploitative policies that were shoved in the mouths of Manipuris or north-eastern states. So it would be better if we also wake up and stop being senseless and free ourselves from the shackles of unreasonable and outdated moral and ethical values. This will definitely assist us in seeing things through the dark cloud of twisted lies and deceptions and see our true goal. To me our true goal should be to attain a united state with a free mind which only drives its people to be free and strive for excellence not for supremacy.

  10. School Authorities needs to start fighting back with all such organizations so that students are not made weapons. Grow up Manipuris

  11. The cause must be supported but using of students in such a manner is highly disagreeable. It’s very threatening to the young minds exposed in such kind of conflict; smday who will be the pillar of a state.

    • then you need to share the agitation..y are u hiding? we faced the same fate, you people simply made comment…students in around the world started many revolution… wangju uprising…tinnamen square uprising… learn smthing..

  12. dear sister urs openion is impressive its not a good idea .But in my openion the student organization are finding an effective way of struggle on their way to achive their gold . how can the few member of the student org. move a effective struggle they need support we should prise them for this . its really true that they are just finding support , ther are not forcing . we shou understand we are demanding protection under in indian constitution so u all need to support

    • Yes bro ..you also have a point but still, the school students are v young to send for agitation like that. They are the “Angry young men” and so ultimately have the tendency to physically fight with the armed forces. And what is the consequences? We all know. In addition to that they are minors, they do not even yet received the voting rights.. so sending them out “to protest” without any proper protection is a really big risk.. The students bodies should keep these things in their mind first cuz similar unfortunate incidents had happnd, this time a Soul’s lost..

  13. I strongly condemned using the student in such issue. Many people of Manipur forgot the meaning of the student and they are supporting on social media by saying “This is also the part of there future”. In Somalia children use guns to fight against there enemy. Its happen the same thing in Meitei land. STOP USING STUDENT.

  14. We all are once or now a student. Who/how will separate students from indigenous people. They too felt the importance, responsibility, brotherhood and love for their motherland. One student lost his life. Our comments should not downed the values of the extreme sacrifices. ” Students shouldn’t be in agitation…..” these words could proved fatal in the present situation.

  15. You must be probably enjoying watching all the “Fun” (this has been used specially for you) happening in this land and giving some smart comment. I am not saying you are wrong but you should have seen the other side also. You must have known there are many KIND of people in Manipur. You should have come to ground zero before you post your idea. Yes, students are being used every now and then. Its wrong. Its even easier criticizing about this. But our land is no more the same as it used to be some 20 or 30 years back. ILP is not the only issue here. Its just one of the hundred issues people are facing in this land which is being ruled by corrupt POLITICIANS who are no less than any dictator.
Today even a child is familiar with words like Brutal Murder, Gang rape, extortions, Unemployments and many more.
These are all because people are less informed, people have no information about what is happening where, people dont have political ideas, people dont have awareness on their rights, duties and policies.
Its easy to say what is right and wrong. It must be easy for you to criticise things.
But we would have appreciated you had you come up with some ideas for people and with some solutions to the ongoing problem.
Please try to educate people as many as you can and give them informations and awareness on how to elect good leaders so that we dont have to face such problems

  16. They are sabotaging the future of the students and that of the land. Young students are being used as scapegoats and as infantry in the front line of a ‘Waterloo’.
Its sad to see many young brothers and sisters confused and frightened in a mess they did not start ,some have already paid the cause with blood and life.
i do recall my fair share of such experience during my time.
A young mind is like an arrow, it should never be alter to let it stray in the wrong direction.
What have become of the place i call Home!!

Student activism is work by students to cause political, environmental, economic, or social change.

Modern student activist movements vary widely in subject, size, and success. A large student movements fought on both sides of the apartheid struggle in South Africa . Students in Paris and Bologna staged collective actions as early as the 13th century an protest.Australian Students have a long history of being active in political debates. Student politics of Bangladesh is reactive, confrontational and violent. Student organizations act as the armament of the political parties they are part of it. In Canada New Left student organizations from the late 1950s and 1960s became mainly two: SUPA (Student union for peace action) and CYC (Company of Young Canadians). SUPA grew out of the CUCND (Combined Universities Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) in December 1964. Indonesia has hosted “some of the most important acts of student resistance in the world’s history”.[33] university student groups have repeatedly been the first groups to stage street demonstrations calling for governmental change at key points in the nation’s history.

Sunflower Student Movement in 2014. There is manny more.

Long live Manipuri students and I am proud I was student of Manipur. Seeing all the past history student are part in the reform of state or country policy and protocols . What ever you all are doing is for us.

  18. No one use the students as their tools..They ar jurt take their part to Democratic protest for their democratic right…if we dicusson about Formal education and non formal education thn students are keep inside the classroom with only book is not good at all..

  19. students should not be restricted in classroom only, while they are students, they should involve in various social, political, cultural and tradition activities through nonviolence means to build themselves competent enough for tomorrow , regarding ILPS, since, Governor of Manipur reserved it, it’s time to build pressure on Govt. of India through Governor, president and Prime Minister of India. Mobilizing opposition parties at national level to pressure the ruling on ILPS. letter campaign on the issue to the Governor of Manipur, President and Prime Mister of India and heads of the opposition parties may a part of the movement for ILPS.

    • Are you justifying that these students should be exposed like this???
I am sure that there are many ways to learn n shape our personality n groom ourselves for tomorrow, other than being exposed to violent with a first hand experience.

  20. Takes me to my LFS days in 80s when so many of us had to migrate to other States to give our Xth….we were forced to join the protest…very sad.
Hope young people will think deeper to make a difference for peace and prosperity….
Students out here are also the soft target whenever elections come from the political parties luring them with vehicles, money, motorcycles, mobiles….

    • if your community becom extinct or minority in your own homland then what tha importence of peace posperity . at that time your heart would fill with full of lamen.

  21. It is not the question of involment of students in such protest or agitation, the question about the chaotic environment created by this land of jewel’s government, the question is about their understanding about the future of the people of this land of jewel ( named by so called nehru). It is the creation of the government if parents are sending their children to other state for their further education. It is also about the question why manipur government do not try to disscuss any issues before its to late and brings a settlement untill there arises a public mass prostest? Tell me how can student concentrate in their study in such invironment!

  22. Dont involve students in agitation again.let them in class room.let them study at free zone.otherwise, our state future wouldnt develop any more n our young generation will obviously face same issues like we do.

  23. This happens from the beginning there comes any issues in manipur pulling students only ……this makes the students scary in their heart for any coming issues in manipur ….This is my personal experience when I was student of TG.And comments like “ching chong” is not only for students even working in a good organisation comments is there for manipuri people.

  24. You are right and have the courage to criticize the situation and conditions of the students., where criticism can be life threatening. If all students united and come together with a vision to fight band and strikes and follow the path of an academician, it can be stopped.

  25. “Institutions keeping the students in the classroom are bullied,
The Institutions committed to provide education to students,
But you would find many applicants for admission,
Creating another protest demanding to get admissions,
It’s time to ask yourself why you seek for admission from such institutions ?”
they dont follow RTE they are sucking blood of poor people

  26. Students are pillars of the nation/country/state, if they do not care or think for their future then who would safeguard their future? We must know the role of the students in our society for better & peaceful nation/state, once we/I were students & we know very well what to do for our bright future so stop criticizing & join the protest for ILP.

  27. Its good to discus together but the openion against truth may spoil the centiment of the people this may lead another way in this anethokppe socity .so bro at koijam for the shake of ur state u pleas stop comenting such foul langguage . Don’t u love your native habitate we can’t find eleswher find on the glob . As we r prt of India we are Demanding protection under indian constitution.

  28. A small thought- ILP VS Human dynamic: Human being posses two way of… expressions. They are self preservations and the second one is expansion or boundless. These are two basic fundamental expressions in our life as a individual and it works and applicable to all human beings. Within these two frame work nature of human being then we start doing things in the world. May be wrong or may be right all it depends on context or situations. Today it is right. However tomorrow it will be just the reverse. Tomorrow you will invite peoples from across the glove for further development at this same place. But dealing with agitations and making turmoil across this small land and I think we can avoid such kind of activities by applying more holistic and in a more inclusive manner. For this we need to be more sensitive and awareness. ILP VS STUDENT INVOLVEMENT: ILP is a political issues. However student till 18 years old they should not involve in real life political situations at any cost. First they must be nourished and we must make them full blown human being in terms of EMOTION, BODY DEVELOPMENT,PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE and WISDOMS. I feel it is too much that students below 18 years are involving in Political State Issues. It is purely on my personal understanding not to hurt anybody. Regards

  29. Students were used as pawns. The organizations behind this are no different than Hamas, LTTE who used children and women as human shield.

  30. We are the one who sold the land. And the one extorting from them are the self made protector of Manipur. With ILP , the bureaucrates will continue to benefit themself and still the land will be in their hands. ILP or no ILP, hope this will spread awareness.

  31. What is the difference between MALANA and ROBINHOOD? Malana, a student, fought against injustice and she got nobel prize and u people say, oh! She is a minor student and fought for justice, she is worth for nobel prize and Robinhood, a student too fought for justice and died and what does he get? You assholes say, i feel pity of him but he should be in classroom, he should have not involve in such act. He get Your insults. And whatever you brainless peoples’ opinions are i am proud that our kangleipak has thousands of students worthy of nobel prize. Ningtamba leibak amagee maheiroiga meekha poliba leibak amagee maheiroiga khenaba yam lei.

  32. Love this article. I am totally against such situations in manipur. N I m against ilp. What if every state demands ilp? Meeramdagi lakpa meesingna hendanaba hotnagey, yum lam yondnaba hotnagey di khandadana ilp demand tou lei. Oiroi manipur oiroi. Yam chaokhatoi watli. Wakhal yam pikli eikhoi manipuri singsey. .

  33. Yes its very true. But those who need to listen to this will purposely close their ears n those who need to see will close their eys.

  34. catholic school are looting the people of manipur in name of charity and education but in real they are sucking the blood of poor people

  35. Time we cha……………nge!!! all is not about protests n bandhs… social political causes be pursued systematically…leaders pl. dont be behind d uniform clad innocent children fight… n pursue its democracy we r living in……..l

  36. nobody didnot use these student it a misleaded idea . how can u prove that student org. use them it an unnecessary idea . its dengerous for young student to take part in such movement . to the policemen these student are like their son’s . how can it be like this did u aspect such incidence between you and your brother . I mean that if necessary they can tak part in such incidence but according to their want . they are part of this community they have their responsibility aswell police should bear the mind of brootherhood. on what interest uu wrote such article . what have you plan for them. i know on what interest u wrote it.

  37. Pl don’t mix education n politics, there is so much difference between these two words.Trying to mix it is like mixing oil n water. The result is clear, negative results obviously cause history is witness we all knw it.lets make education a free zone frm all related political issues.otherwise our future is nothing.ILP is a big issue for our mother land but d way which we gave voice is off track it will leads us to wrong direction rather dan our destination.

  38. You cant blame your guest for changing your culture or norms. But you can strenghten the value with your dear ones living within your roof. Charity begins at home.

    • Not blaming others, it’s only for protection and promotion of the identities of minority, ethnic indigenous communities. Morality is different from politics

  39. First, let the student body themselves settle the issue of leadership…with so many student org. it shows nothing but the greed for power and leadership.. Though the cause is just but the manner how it is being enforced and through whom its being enforced does not earn respect. But i equally blame the student leaders for the unfortunate death of 16 year old Robinson.

  40. Some of the above coments r really sucks. Today when I read about the boy who is no more. I was crying alone reading his last day daily routine story. In that story, he was a very happy young boy. Before going to school he was admiring himself looking at the mirror ( as always the young person does) . Talking to his family, telling his dad to repair his cycle, since he doesn’t want to wait for auto to go to school. His dad drop him to auto stand, promising that he will repair his cycle. That was his last goodbye.
SO MY QUESTION IS WHERE THE HELL THE BOY MENTION ABOUT ILP????? HE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW THERE IS A PROTEST FOR ILP. He was not prepared for the protest. He was just a inocent young boy. RIP my dear boy. We all love u.
